I have a small grass area but it does not thrive because of high trees. Sun until 3 pm. What should I do? Is there a grass seed for such a condition, that REALLY grows? - top

I would suggest Titan LTD and also using a lawn starter and pellet lime. Seed at the rate of 5lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. Titan is available here at our store. Come by and see us.

I need to know If landscaping fabric will keep moles out of my garden with rock on top of it then the soil or do i need to have a special mesh material? - top

The landscape fabric will not keep out moles. However, we have a product called Permatil. Permatil is small pieces of slate that discourages moles from digging and should be incorporated into the soil about 5 inches deep.

To what extent have you found knockout roses to be deer resistant in our area? - top

Unfortunately, deer seem to be attracted to the tender blooms of roses and even the thorns don't discourage them. However, spraying Liquid Fence works very well! We have had personal experience with its success. Liquid Fence is a totally natural product that deters deer and rabbits by its smell. We sell a 32 fl. oz. bottle for $14.38. One bottle will cover approximately 500 square feet.

How do I know when I should prune my shrubs? - top

It is best to prune your shrubs during the winter months of February and March. Renewal pruning during the winter is the preferred method for pruning shrubs because the plant is dormant. Decisions on which wood to leave and which to remove are easily made when leaves are not present. The structure of the shrub is also important when pruning and is easier to determine during the winter.

Is Falcon III fescue the best seed to plant in this area for a year round green and drought tolerant lawn? If not, what do you recommend? - top

Falcon III is one of many fine turf type fescues. We at Jamestown Feed & Seed recommend Titan Ltd for superior drought tolerance and dark green color. Titan can spread by below ground shoots called rhizomes. The mother plant sends out shoots to fill in thin areas, thus you obtain a more uniform turf.

Do you have any soil in bulk that has nutrients in it already?  - top

We do have bulk compost soil builder that will add many nutrients to your soil.  The cost is $34.95 per yard with a $35 delivery fee.  The minimum delivery order is 4 yards.  Come by and see us or call 757-564-8528 to order.

We'd like to plant some low growing perennials in a mostly shady area ... what would you recommend? - top

A shady area for growing low growing perennials is a really tough one. Most flowering perennials are not low growing and most require at least some sun. We have a couple suggestions. One is ajuga (we have ajuga chocolate chip in stock). Ajuga has beautiful broadleaf leaves that are green, bronze and purple with little purple flowers which bloom in spring. Ajuga is a ground cover that is hardy for our area and can spread pretty quickly. It also transplants nicely.
Goldilocks is another suggestion. It has delicate clusters of chartreuse leaves, grows readily and has a trailing habit. It works well in a container as well. I could be considered a type of bog plant in that it can take lots of water and can grow if stuck down in a pond for instance. However, it is also drought tolerant. There aren't many plants one can say both of those things about! It can also take sun, but should do well in a mostly shaded area as well. We have a few goldilocks in stock at this time.
